Vocational Nursing

Hospice nursing, Bay City, Texas

The level of professionalism and kindness of faculty and staff.

I’m a columnist for my local newspaper in Bay City, Texas.

I chose WCJC because they were willing to work with me as a Hurricane Katrina Evacuee. The administration was compassionate and very helpful. WCJC’s vocational nursing program allowed me to continue on with my goals to become a nurse.

Everyone from the course instructors to the staff are all very encouraging people and they all want you to achieve your goals. At the same time there’s a kind of small town charm, you get to know people there and you feel like your part of a community and not just going to a school.”

My experience at Wharton County Junior College was very, very positive. The professional attitude and the emphasis on professionalism really prepared me for my career.

My family and I lost our home in hurricane Katrina in 2005. I was welcomed into the Vocational Nursing program two weeks after the storm with open arms. WCJC allowed me to basically jump start my career and be able to sort of pick up the pieces after Katrina and make a living for my family. Before, we were struggling and now I have opportunities that I never would have.

In one year I had job stability. I can work anywhere. Nursing is always in demand and it is a flexible career with many different types of options. I found my niche as a hospice nurse. I take care of terminally ill patients; I go to patient’s homes, nursing homes and hospitals. It is very rewarding to be able to help and just be there for them and their families when they are going through a rough time.

I’m really really glad that I chose Wharton County Junior College. I’m very grateful to them for working with my situation and I would recommend the college to anybody who wants to improve their situation in life, whether it be financially or professionally.
