Meet the Faculty

Mr. Grubb worked in public history and education before joining the WCJC faculty in 2012. He teaches U.S. History 1301 and 1302, Texas History 2301, Western Civilization 2311 and 2312, and Geography 1303.He received his undergraduate degree in socio-cultural anthropology and his M.A. in history from the University of Houston-Clear Lake. He has additional graduate hours in education from the University of St. Thomas and geography from Texas State University and the University of Houston-Clear Lake. His primary research interests are political rhetoric and social discourse, mass media and propaganda, 20th-century military history, and the impacts of globalization.

Mr. Bennett joined the faculty of WCJC in the fall of 2023 and teaches History 1301 and 1302 in face-to-face classes at the Richmond and Sugarland UH campuses as well as online. He received his B.A. in History from the University of Texas at Arlington, his M.A. in History from Louisiana Tech University and has earned several graduate credits towards a PHD from the University of Houston. His research interest includes political, economic, and social history with an emphasis on nation and state building.

Mr. Cirsovius joined the WCJC faculty in Fall 2023 and teaches U.S. History 1301 and 1302.  He studied History and English at Ludwig-Maximilians Universität in Munich, Germany and received his M.A. in History from Midwestern State University.

Ms. Griffith has taught U.S. History 1301 and 1302 courses at WCJC since 1999, including several dual-credit classes to area high schools. She received her B.A. and M.A. from the University of Houston-Clear Lake.

Mr. Guidry joined the faculty of WCJC in the Fall of 2018 and teaches History 1301 and 1302 in face-to-face classes at the Wharton campus as well as online. He received his B.A. in History and English from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and his M.A. in History from Louisiana State University where he focused on American cultural history. His research interests include American popular culture, the history of religion, and methods of historical instruction.

Ms. Shelton joined the WCJC faculty in 2001 and teaches courses in U.S. History 1301 and 1302. She received her B.A. in History from the University of Texas at Austin and her M.A. from Texas State University. She is the former Department Head for the History, Geography, Government, and Economics Department and currently serves as Division Chair for the Social and Behavioral Sciencess Division.

Mr. Villa joined the WCJC faculty in Fall 2023 and teaches U.S. History 1301 and 1302 at the Wharton campus and online.  He earned his M.A. in History from American Military University and his B.A. in Social Sciences from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.  He has additional graduate hours in education from Notre Dame of Maryland University. His research interests are Trade and Maritime Conflicts, World War II, and the Civil War experience and its impact on the development of sports culture in the American South. Mr. Villa is a retired police officer with experience in patrol, street gangs and financial crimes and has been teaching at the collegiate level since 2010.

Mr. Barbee received his Bachelor's and Master’s degrees from Sam Houston State University. He currently teaches dual credit U.S. History 1301 and 1302 courses at Wharton High School. Mr. Barbee’s research interests include the early American Republic, westward expansion, and Texas history.

Mr. Bartee joined WCJC in 2019 and currently teaches U.S. History 1301 and 1302. He received his B.A. from the University of Houston-Downtown and his M.A. from Arizona State University. Outside of the classroom, his research interests include the Caribbean slave trade, military strategy during the Revolutionary War, and the American media reaction to Hitler and the Nazi threat.

Mr. Driver teaches History 1301 and 1302 at Bay City High School. He earned his B.A. in Classics at Baylor University and his Master’s in Education with an emphasis in History from Texas State University.

Ms. Jensen received her Bachelor's in History from Texas A&M University, her Master’s in Educational Leadership from Lamar University and has graduate hours in History from Sam Houston State University. She currently teaches dual credit U.S. History 1301 and 1302 courses at El Campo High School.

Dr. Spellman teaches U.S. History 1301 and 1302, as well as Texas History. He’s been a member of the WCJC History faculty since 1998. He received his B.A. from Southwestern University, his M.A. from the University of Texas at Austin, and his Ph.D. from the University of Houston. Dr. Spellman is the author of ten books on Texas history, a member of the Texas State Historical Association, and was inducted into the Western Writers of America in 2009.

Mr. Sullivan received his Bachelor's from Sam Houston State University and his Master's from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. Mr. Sullivan joined WCJC in 2013 and focuses on distance learning courses. His research interests center around representations of the Second World War in film across time. He also focuses on political, economic, and military history.
