ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE (AAS) CORE CURRICULUM
The
Associate of Applied Science is an occupationally
oriented degree. Its primary purpose is to prepare
students for entry into a particular occupation upon
completion of the degree. Descriptions of WCJC's AAS
degrees, along with required degree plans, are listed
alphabetically. All AAS degree programs are comprised of
between 60 – 72 semester credit hours, and must contain
a minimum of fifteen semester credit hours of general
education courses, including one course from each of the
following areas:
Math/Natural Science:
Any college-level MATH course. Any laboratory science
course. Note: If taking GEOL 1303, GEOL 1103 must be
taken. If taking GEOL
1304,
GEOL 1104 must be taken.
Social/Behavioral Science:
ANTH 2346; ANTH 2351; CRIJ 1307; ECON 2301 or
2302;
GEOG 1303; GOVT 2301 or 2302; HIST 1301 or 1302 or 2301
or 2311 or
2312;
PSYC 2301 or 2306 or 2314 or 2315; SOCI 1301 or 1306 or
2306 or 2319.
Humanities or Performing/Visual Arts:
Any ARTS course(s); any DRAM
course(s); ENGL 2322 or 2323 or 2327 or 2332 or 2333 or
2340; HIST 2311 or
2312;
HUMA 1301; HUMA 2323; any MUSI course(s); PHIL 1301;
SPAN 1411 or
1412
or 2311 or 2312.
Note: A course cannot count toward more than one general
education requirement.

General Education Electives:
The
remaining general education courses must be academic
transfer courses of collegiate level and general in
nature, not geared to a specific occupation.
AAS College-level Competencies:
Six
basic intellectual competencies (reading, writing,
speaking, listening, critical thinking, and computer
literacy) noted by the Texas Higher education
Coordinating Board (CoBoard) are deemed essential to the
learning process. These competencies are integrated into
the instruction methods of the courses within the
general education core for AAS degrees at WCJC.
Applicants for the Associate of Applied Science (AAS)
degree must:
A.
Satisfy all conditions for admission.
B.
Pass all three sections of the THEA test or satisfy the
basic skills
requirement in an way prescribed by the Texas Higher
Education
Coordinating Board.
C.
Successfully complete all coursework according to
program deadlines.
D.
Complete no more than forty percent (40%) of required
course work via
distance learning delivery methods.
E.
Complete at least twenty-four semester hours, including
nine of the last
fifteen hours, at Wharton County Junior College.
F.
Meet all financial obligations to the college.
Programs and courses within programs are subject to
deletion or change without
