  DHYG 1223. Dental Hygiene Practice                                                 2:2:0

Examination of the dental hygienist’s role in practice settings including dental office management, employment considerations, résumé preparation, and job interviewing.  Emphasis on the laws governing the practice of dentistry and dental hygiene and the ethical standards established by the dental hygiene profession. Prerequisites:  DHYG 2362, 2201, 1315, and 1235 with grade of C or better. [Offered spring semester.]

  DHYG 1227.  Preventive Dental Hygiene Care.                                 2:2:0

Study of the dental hygienist in the dental health care system and the basic concepts of disease prevention and health promotion.  Communication and behavior modification skills are emphasized to facilitate the role of the dental hygienist as an educator.  Prerequisites:  1301, 1311, and 1431 with grade of C or better. [Offered spring semester.]

  DHYG 1235. Pharmacology for the Dental Hygienist.                        2:2:0

A study of the classes of drugs and their uses, actions, interactions, side effects, contraindications, and oral manifestations with emphasis on dental applications. Prerequisites:  DHYG 1339, 1304, 1261, 1227, 1319, and 1307 with grade of C or better. [Offered fall semester.]

  DHYG 1261.  Clinical Dental Hygiene I.                                             2:0:11

An introductory level course.  Augmentation of basic instrumentation, professionalism, and comprehensive care of the patient.  Clinical experience in instrumentation and prophylaxis technique on patients including preventive techniques.  Further development of concepts of oral prophylaxis and applied preventive measures.  Prerequisites:  DHYG 1301, 1311, and 1431 with a grade of C or better. [Offered spring semester.]

  DHYG 1271.  Service Learning for Local Need.                                2:2:0

An advanced level course.  A structure learning experience that combines community service with explicit academic learning objectives, preparation, and reflection. Further development of clinical skills, interpersonal skills, and leadership while facilitating a sense of social responsibility and citizenship skills. Impacts academic learning by demonstrating problem analysis, critical thinking, and cognitive development as well as benefiting the community.  Prerequisites:  DHYG 2362, 2201, 1315, and 1235 with grade of C or better. [Offered spring semester.]

  DHYG 1301.  Orofacial Anatomy, Histology & Embryology.               3:3:1

A study of histology and embryology of oral tissues, gross anatomy of the head and neck, tooth morphology, and individual tooth identification.  Prerequisites: Open only to students admitted to Dental Hygiene program. [Offered fall semester.]

  DHYG 1304.  Dental Radiology.                                                         3:2:3

A study of radiation physics, hygiene, and safety theories.  Emphasis on the fundamentals of oral radiographic techniques and interpretation of radiographs. Includes exposure of intra-oral radiographs, quality assurance, radiographic interpretation, patient selection criteria, and other ancillary radiographic techniques. Prerequisites:  DHYG 1301, 1311, and 1431 with grade of C or better. [Offered spring semester.]

  DHYG 1307.  General & Dental Nutrition.                                          3:3:0

A study of general nutrition and nutritional biochemistry with emphasis on the effects of nutrition and dental health.  Analysis of diet and application of counseling strategies to assist the patient in attaining and maintaining optimum oral health.  Prerequisites:  DHYG 1301, 1311, and 1431 with grade of C or better. [Offered spring semester.]

  DHYG 1311.  Periodontology.                                                           3:3:0

Study of normal and diseased periodontium to include the structural, functional, and environmental factors.  Emphasis on etiology, pathology, treatment modalities, and therapeutic and preventive periodontics in a contemporary private practice setting.  Prerequisites:  Open only to students admitted to Dental Hygiene program. [Offered fall semester.]

  DHYG 1315.  Community Dentistry.                                                   3:3:1

Study of the principles and concepts of community public health and dental health education with an emphasis on community assessment, educational planning, implementation, and evaluation.  Laboratory emphasizes methods and materials used in teaching dental health education in various community settings.  Prerequisites:  DHYG 1339, 1304, 1261, 1227, 1319, and 1307 with grade of C or better. [Offered fall semester.]

  DHYG 1319.  Dental Materials.                                                          3:2:2

Study of dental materials including the physical and chemical properties and application of the various materials used in dentistry.  Student experiences include manipulation of dental materials in the lab setting.  Prerequisites:  DHYG 1339, 1304, 1261, 1227, and 1307 with grade of C or better. [Offered summer I.]

  DHYG 1339.  General and Oral Pathology.                                       3:3:0

General study of disturbances in human body development, diseases of the body, and disease prevention measures.  Emphasis on the oral cavity and associated structures.  Prerequisites:  DHYG 1301, 1311, and 1431 with grade of C or better. [Offered spring semester.]

  DHYG 1431.  Preclinical Dental Hygiene.                                         4:2:6

Foundational knowledge for performing clinical skills on patients.  Emphasis on principles, procedures, and professionalism for performing comprehensive oral prophylaxis.  Prerequisites:  Open only to students admitted to Dental Hygiene program. [Offered fall semester.]

  DHYG 2201. Contemporary Dental Hygiene Care I.                          2:2:0

An intermediate level course.  Introduction to dental hygiene care for the medically or dentally compromised patient.  Emphasizes supplemental instrumentation techniques.  Prerequisites:  DHYG 1339, 1304, 1261, 1227,  1307, and 1319 with grade of C or better. [Offered fall semester.]

  DHYG 2231. Contemporary Dental Hygiene Care II.                        2:2:0

An advanced level course.  A continuation of dental hygiene care for the medically or dentally compromised patient.  Emphasizes advanced instrumentation techniques.  Prerequisites:  DHYG 2362, 2201, 1315, and 1235 with grade of C or better. [Offered spring semester.]

  DHYG 2362.  Clinical Dental Hygiene II.                                          3:0:14

An intermediate level course.  Clinical practice in dental hygiene procedures and exposing radiographs, advanced prophylaxis technique, presentation and discussion of case histories from current patients, and preventive measures employed against disease within clinical practice.  Emphasis on safety practices and interpersonal and teamwork skills.  Prerequisites:  DHYG 1339, 1304, 1261, 1319, 1227, and 1307 with grade of C or better. [Offered fall semester.]

  DHYG 2363.  Clinical Dental Hygiene III.                                         3:0:14

An advanced level course. Continuation and advancement of dental hygiene clinical and radiographic skills and advanced study in prophylaxis with special attention to the medically or dentally compromised patient, oral physiology, and oral therapeutics within clinical practice.  Emphasis on legal and ethical behavior. Prerequisites:  DHYG 2362, 2201, 1315, and 1235 with a grade of C or better [Offered spring semester.]
