Emphasis on the
laws governing the practice of dentistry and dental hygiene, moral standards,
and the ethical standards established by the dental hygiene profession. Practice
settings for the dental hygienist, office operations, and preparation for
employment.. Prerequisites:
DHYG 2362, 2201, 1315, and 1235 with grade of C or better. [Offered

The
dental hygienist in the dental health care system emphasizing the basic concepts
of disease prevention and health promotion. Communication and behavior
modification skills are utilized to facilitate the role of the dental hygienist
as an educator.
Prerequisites: 1301, 1311,
and 1431 with grade of C or better. [Offered spring semester.]
.A study of the classes of drugs and their
uses, actions, interactions, side effects, contraindications, and oral
manifestations with emphasis on dental applications. Prerequisites:
DHYG 1339, 1304, 1261, 1227, 1319, and 1307 with grade of C or better.

A health-related
work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized
occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the
clinical professional.
Prerequisites: DHYG 1301,
1311, and 1431 with a grade of C or better. [Offered spring semester.]
An advanced level course. A structure learning experience that combines community service with explicit academic learning objectives, preparation, and reflection. Further development of clinical skills, interpersonal skills, and leadership while facilitating a sense of social responsibility and citizenship skills. Impacts academic learning by demonstrating problem analysis, critical thinking, and cognitive development as well as benefiting the community. Prerequisites: DHYG 2362, 2201, 1315, and 1235 with grade of C or better. [Offered spring semester.]
The histology and
embryology of oral tissues, gross anatomy of the head and neck, tooth
morphology, and individual tooth identification.
Prerequisites: Open only to students admitted to Dental Hygiene program.

Radiation physics, biology, hygiene, and safety theories with an emphasis on the fundamentals of oral radiographic techniques and interpretation of radiographs. Includes exposure of intra-oral radiographs, quality assurance, radiographic interpretation, patient selection criteria, and other ancillary radiographic techniques.
General nutrition
and nutritional biochemistry with emphasis on the effects of nutrition, dental
health, diet, and application of counseling strategies.
Prerequisites: DHYG 1301,
1311, and 1431 with grade of C or better. [Offered spring semester.]
Normal and
diseased periodontium including the structural, functional, and environmental
factors. Emphasis on etiology, pathology, treatment modalities, and therapeutic
and preventive periodontics.
Prerequisites: Open only to students admitted to Dental Hygiene program.

The principles
and concepts of community public health and dental health education emphasizing
community assessment, educational planning, implementation, and evaluation
including methods and materials used in teaching dental health education in
various community settings. Prerequisites: DHYG
1339, 1304, 1261, 1227, 1319, and 1307 with grade of C or better. [Offered fall
semester.]
Physical and
chemical properties of dental materials including the application and
manipulation of the various materials used in dentistry. Prerequisites:
DHYG 1339, 1304, 1261, 1227, and 1307 with grade of C or better. [Offered
summer I.]
Disturbances in
human body development, diseases of the body, and disease prevention measures
with emphasis on the oral cavity and associated structures.
Prerequisites: DHYG 1301,
1311, and 1431 with grade of C or better. [Offered spring semester.]
Foundational
knowledge for performing clinical skills on patients with emphasis on procedures
and rationale for performing dental hygiene care.
Prerequisites: Open only to

Dental
hygiene care for the medically or dentally compromised patient including
supplemental instrumentation techniques.
