  Career Opportunities

Career opportunities have dramatically increased within the last decade, and continue to escalate, in the field of health information management. The Department of Labor Statistics cites health information management as one of the 20 fastest growing career fields in the 21st Century. The growth of managed care has created additional job opportunities for health information professionals. Local, regional, and national positions are available to entry-level graduates and Registered Health Information Technicians.

  Career Outlook

Health Information Technicians works in various settings such as hospitals, long-term care facilities; psychiatric facilities, ambulatory care centers, insurance companies, physicians’ offices, local, state, and federal agencies. Annual entry-level salaries can start in the $20,000 – 30,000 range with salary increases with the number of years in the profession and educational advancements. Health Information Technicians have diverse job titles including director, manager, coder, assistant director, and supervisor. Due to the ever-changing healthcare arena, new job titles are being created for Health Information Technicians in:
  • Corporate and departmental compliance

  • Database management

  • Information security

  • Information systems/computer science

  • Patient advocate

  • Information privacy
