  HITT 1167.  Practicum I Health Information Technology.                  1:0:8

Practical general training and experiences in the workplace.  The college with the employer develops and documents an individualized plan for the student.  The plan relates the workplace training and experiences to the student’s general and technical course of study.  The guided external experiences are unpaid. Prerequisites:  HITT 1249, HITT 1301, HITT 1305, MRMT 1307, HITT 1345, and HITT 1353. [Primary semester is fall, but can be offered as needed.]

  HITT 1249.  Pharmacology.                                                               2:2:0

Overview of the basic concepts of the pharmacological treatment of various diseases affecting major body systems. Prerequisite:  None [Offered spring semester at Wharton]

  HITT 1301.  Health Data Content and Structure.                                3:2:2

Introduction to systems and processes for collecting, maintaining, and disseminating primary and secondary health-related information.  Instruction in delivery and organizational structure to include content of health records, documentation requirements, registries, indices, licensing, regulatory agencies, forms, and screens. Prerequisite:  None. [Offered fall semester.]

  HITT 1305.  Medical Terminology.                                                     3:3:0

Study of word origin and structure through the introduction of prefixes, suffixes, root words, plurals, abbreviations and symbols, surgical procedures, medical specialties, and diagnostic procedures.  Prerequisite:  None. [Offered fall semester.]

  HITT 1345.  Health Care Delivery Systems.                                        3:3:0

Introduction to organization, financing, and delivery of health care services, accreditation, licensure, and regulatory agencies.  Prerequisite:  None. [Offered fall semester.]

  HITT 1353.  Legal and Ethical Aspects of Health Information.            3:3:0

Concepts of confidentiality, ethics, health care legislation, and regulations relating to the maintenance and use of health information.  Prerequisite:  HITT 1301. [Offered spring semester.]

  HITT 1355.  Health Care Statistics.                                                      3:3:0

General principles of health care statistics with emphasis in hospital statistics.  Skill development in computation and calculation of health data with overview of guidelines for Texas Department of Health Vital Statistics and studies.  Prerequisites:  Concurrent enrollment in HITT 1167, HITT 1441, HPRS 2301 and HITT 1311. [Offered fall semester.]

  HITT 1441.  Coding and Classification Systems.                                 4:2:4

Application of basic coding rules principles, guidelines and conventions.  Prerequisites:  HITT 1301, HITT 1305, BIOL 2401, BIOL 2402 and concurrent enrollment in HPRS 2301. [Offered fall semester.]

  HITT 2166.  Practicum II Health Information Technology.                  1:0:8

  HITT 2167. Practicum III Health Information Technology.                  1:0:8

Practical general training and experiences in the workplace.  The college with the employer develops and documents an individualized plan for the student.  The plan relates the workplace training and experiences to the student’s general and technical course of study.  The guided external experiences are unpaid.  Prerequisites:  HITT 2339, HITT 2435, and HITT 2443. [Primary semester is summer, but can be offered as needed.]

  HITT 2339.  Health Information Organization and Supervision.         3:3:0

Principles of organization and supervision of human, fiscal, and capital resources. Prerequisites:  HITT 1353 and HITT 1355. [Offered spring semester.]

  HITT 2435.  Coding and Reimbursement Methodologies.                  4:2:4
(Capstone Course)

Development of advanced coding techniques with emphasis on case studies, health records, and federal regulations regarding prospective payment systems and methods of reimbursement.  Prerequisites:  HPRS 2301, HITT 1355, and HITT 1441. [Offered spring semester.]

  HITT 2443. Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement.       4:4:0  
(Capstone Course)

Study of the many facets of quality standards and methodologies in the health information management environment.  Topics include licensing, accreditation, compilation and presentation of data in statistical formats, quality improvement functions, quality tools, utilization management, risk management, and medical staff data quality issues.  Prerequisites:  Concurrent enrollment in HITT 2339, HITT 2435 and HITT 2166. [Offered spring semester.]

  HPRS 2301.  Pathophysiology.                                                           3:3:0

Study of the pathology and general health management of diseases and injuries across the life span.  Topics include etiology, symptoms, and the physical and psychological reactions to diseases and injuries.  Prerequisites:  BIOL 2402 or consent of instructor. [Offered Fall and Spring semester.]

  MRMT 1307.  Medical Transcription Fundamentals.                           3:2:4

Fundamentals of medical transcription with hands-on experience in transcribing physician dictation including basic reports such as history and physicals, discharge summaries, consultations, operative reports and other medical reports.  Utilizes transcribing and information processing equipment compatible with industry standards.  Designed to develop speed and accuracy.  Prerequisites:  HITT 1301 and HITT 1305 and ability to type 50 wpm or completion of POFT 1227. [Offered spring semester.]

  HITT 1311.  Computers in Health Care.                                            3:3:0

Introduction to the concepts of computer technology related to health care and the tools and techniques for collecting, storing, and retrieving health care data.  Prerequisites:   COSC 1301 or consent of department head. [Offered fall semester.]

Capstone Courses HITT 2167 and HITT 2339 are the culminating evaluative courses that assess the outcome of the major.  All students must  complete these courses with a grade of C or better.
