local, regional, and national health care resources.
Identification of health organizations, support groups, and
health care delivery systems to be used for client referral.

development of the basic counseling skills necessary to
develop an effective helping relationship with clients.
Includes the utilization of special skills to assist in
achieving objectives through exploration of problems,
examination of attitudes and feelings, consideration of
alternative solutions and decision making. Prerequisite:
CHLT 1209 and PSYT 1329. Type: Tech
DAAC 1319. Intro to Alcohol and Other Drug
Addictions. 3:3:0
Causes and
consequences of addiction as they relate to the individual,
family, community, and society are discussed. Response
alternatives regarding intervention, treatment, education,
and prevention are reviewed. Competencies and requirements
for licensure in Texas are explained. Addiction issues
related to diverse populations are presented. Type: Tech
GERS 1342. Aging and Mental Health 3:3:0
Introduction
and analysis of current knowledge and concerns related to
psychological aging. Includes the theoretical and empirical
foundations relevant to the psychological study of the later
part of the life span. The course is taught from an
interdisciplinary perspective and focuses on topics related
to perceptual, cognitive, personality, and interpersonal
social development. Examination of issues related to
psychological adjustment and death and dying. Type: Tech

the student to apply specialized occupational theory,

of the basic communication skills necessary to develop an

counseling techniques such as intake interviewing,
relationship building, problem identification and
resolution. Emphasis on importance of effective oral

behavior management and cognitive theories and techniques

perspectives. Emphasis on current issues regarding
structures of relationships, marriage, and social change.

SCWK 1321. Orientation to Social

Introduction to the basic concepts,
information, and practices within the field of social
services. Topics include a survey of the historical
development of social services; social, legal, and clinical
definitions; and review of current information regarding
indications for and methods of treatment and/or services.
