Admissions Requirements
1.Eligibility for admission to Wharton
County Junior College.
2.High School graduate or GED.
3.College transcripts (if applicable)
4.Qualifying scores on the ACT, THEA or
ASSET.
5.Applicant must be 18 years of age or
older and in good mental and physical health.
6.Applicants must be able to meet the
technical standards of the profession.

ACT scores:
Composite 17+ and Reading 18+
THEA scores:
Reading and Math 230, Writing 220
ASSET
scores: Reading 41,
Math 38, Writing 40 and above
(minimum of 5 and above on Essay),
or a score of 39 (minimum
of 6 or above of Essay).
ACT may be either National
or Local.
Scores can be no older than 5 years.

Program Application Process
Interested applicants must follow the steps listed below in
order to be considered for the Surgical Technology Program.
- Complete and submit WCJC’s Application for Admission. Provide
all required documentation, i.e., high school transcripts,
college transcripts, etc.
- Pay for and reserve a seat for either the ACT (American College
Test), THEA or ASSET (if needed). Scores can be no older than 5
years.
- Take the ACT, THEA, or ASSET. National or Local ACT scores are
accepted.
- Contact program staff at 979-532-6491 to request an application
packet to be mailed or download and print an application packet.
- Have test scores sent to program address in Wharton.
- Provide the Surgical Technology program staff with copies of
Application for Admission, high school transcript (or GED), and
college transcript(s). If you have attended or are currently
attending WCJC, we will also need that transcript. Although WCJC
does not require a high school transcript for transferring
college students, the program does require a high school
transcript for program files.
- Provide a copy of your current driver’s license.
- Provide 3 names and complete mailing addresses for references.
References must not be related to you. (Prefer work, school or
business related)
- Return “Information for Applicants” signature form to program
staff. This form is found in the program application packet.
- Copy of Permanent Residence Card or Visa is applicable.
If an applicant is qualified and has all the required paperwork
in his/her file by the application deadline, the applicant will
have an interview with the instructor. Qualifying for the
program does not guarantee acceptance into the program.
In mid-June, 20 students will be selected to begin class in
August.
If an applicant is accepted into the program, he/she will
receive an acceptance packet in the mail. The applicant will be
required to complete the following before the first day of
class.
- Return Accept/Decline form.
- Final acceptance into the program is contingent upon a
satisfactory background check, which will be completed by an
approved agency. The cost of the criminal background check will
be at the applicant’s expense. The anticipated cost for the
criminal background check is $52.02. Information regarding this
process should be obtained from the Surgical Technology
Department Head.
- Have a physical examination performed by your physician with
satisfactory results. The physical examination form must be
filled out completely, signed and returned to the program.
- Provide immunization record – students must start the Hepatitis
B series prior to December in order to be completed before the
first day of class.
- Submit documentation of tuberculosis skin test.
- Purchase books; a list will be provided.
- Provide evidence of current certification for American Heart
Healthcare provider CPR, which must be maintained throughout the
entirety of the program.
- Pay tuition and fees.

Final acceptance into the program is contingent upon a satisfactory background check and a negative drug screen.
The cost of the criminal background check and the drug screen will be at the applicants expense. Information regarding this process should be obtained from the Surgical Technology Department Head. The estimated expense is $53.00 for the Criminal Background Check and $50.00 for the Drug Screen.
Prior to graduation, the students will take the National Certification exam. The cost of the exam is $190.00 for members of AST. All Surgical Technology students are required to become members of their professional organization AST at the beginning of the Spring semester at a cost of $45.00.
Travel, meals, and parking expenses relative to clinical sites vary according to
individually planned schedules. Students are responsible for these expenses.
