ENGL 1301.  Composition I. (Core 010)                                    3:3:0

Study of English to improve students' ability to think objectively and to communicate effectively.  Stress on clarity and effectiveness in the sentence, paragraph, and whole composition.  The composition is chiefly expository, and assigned material is designed to increase students' ability to read objectively, to develop skills in critical analysis, and to improve their style. Prerequisites: THEA reading and writing requirements met. [Offered fall, spring and summer semesters.  Also offered as an Internet course.]

  ENGL 1302.  Composition II. (Core 010)                                   3:3:0

Second half of the English composition sequence.  Emphasizes the process of writing a research paper and analysis and interpretation of printed material.  Students are encouraged to read with a degree of sophistication and to apply the principles of critical thinking and organization to written assignments.  Prerequisites:  ENGL 1301 [Offered fall, spring and summer semesters.  Also offered as an Internet course.]

  ENGL 2311.  Technical Report Writing.                                   3:3:0

The study of the fundamentals of good, clear writing in the scientific and technical fields. Students are instructed in the planning and preparation of reports, correspondence, and other professional communication applicable to a wide range of disciplines and careers. The course emphasizes audience analysis, research skills, effective design, and clear, concise, accurate expression. Preparation and presentation of oral reports will be covered. Prerequisite:  ENGL 1302 with a grade of C or better. [Offered fall and spring semesters; occasionally offered in the summer. Also offered as an Internet course.]

  ENGL 2322.  British Literature I. (Core 040)                             3:3:0

Chronological study of the major works and literary trends in British literature from the Old English period through the eighteenth century. Prerequisite:  ENGL 1302. [Offered fall and summer I semesters.]

  ENGL 2323.  British Literature II. (Core 040)                            3:3:0

Chronological study of British literature from the Romantic period to the present, focusing on the major authors and literary trends of each period.  Prerequisite: ENGL 1302.  ENGL 2322 not a prerequisite for ENGL 2323. [Offered spring and summer II semesters.]

  ENGL 2327.  American Literature I. (Core 040)                        3:3:0  [Offered every semester]

Focuses on American Literature from the pre-Colonial Period through the Romantic Period.  Prerequisite:  ENGL 1302

  ENGL 2328.  American Literature II. (Core 040)                       3:3:0  [Offered every semester]

Focuses on American Literature from the Age of Realism through the Modern Period. Prerequisite:  ENGL 1302. ENGL 2327 is not a prerequisite for ENGL 2328.

  ENGL 2332.  World Literature I. (Core 040)                              3:3:0

Focuses on Western and non-Western literary works from the ancient world through the Renaissance.  Prerequisite:  ENGL 1302. [Offered fall semester; occasionally offered in the summer.]

  ENGL 2333.  World Literature II. (Core 040)                             3:3:0

Focuses on Western and non-Western literary works from the eighteenth through the twentieth centuries.  Prerequisite:  ENGL 1302. ENGL 2332 is not a prerequisite for ENGL 2333. [Offered spring and summer semesters.]

  ENGL 2341.  Forms of Literature. (Core 040)                            3:3:0

The study of one or more literary genres including, but not limited to, poetry, fiction, drama, and film.  The course topic and the nature and specific focus of a field trip, if any, vary by semester.  May be repeated for credit.  Prerequisite: ENGL 1302. [Offered occasionally in the fall, spring, and summer semesters.]        

  HUMA 1301. Introduction to Humanities. (Core 040)                 3:3:0

An interdisciplinary, multi-perspective assessment of cultural, political, philosophical, and aesthetic factors critical to the formulation of values and the historical development of the individual and society.
     

  PHIL: Introduction to the study of ideas and their logical structure, including arguments and investigations about abstract and real phenomena. Includes introduction to the history, theories, and methods of reasoning.
