MUSIC (MUSI)  Lecture and (MUEN) Ensemble

  MUSI 1159 (or DRAM 1162).  Musical Theater.                                    1:0:3

Study of and practical experience in the integration of music, acting, and staging through the production of a full-length musical theater presentation.  Serves as an opera workshop.  May be counted as Music or Drama but not both.  May be repeated for a total of two semester hours. Prerequisite:  None. [Offered as demand requires.]

  MUSI 1181.  Class Piano.                                                                    1:0:3

Provides basic knowledge of the nomenclature and function of the instrument through the study of keyboard skills. Includes all major scales, hands separately, harmonization of simple melodies at sight, sight-reading, transposition, and simple repertoire. Prerequisite:  Consent of department heard. [Offered fall and spring semesters.]

  MUSI 1182.  Class Piano.                                                                   1:0:3

Includes all major scales, hands together, two octaves; harmonic minor scales two octaves, harmonization of simple melodies at sight, sight-reading, transposition, and repertoire. The second course is a continuation with increasing difficulty of the skills studied in MUSI 1181.  A minimum of three hours practice a week. Prerequisite:  Grade of C or better in MUSI 1181. [Offered fall and spring semesters.]

  MUSI 1183.  Class Voice.                                                                   1:1:1

Class instruction in the fundamentals of correct breathing, tone production, and diction.  Laboratory course designed for students with little or no previous voice training to aid in developing a pleasing quality produced with care and proper enunciation.  Fundamentals of singing such as tone quality; controlled breathing; resonance; use of the tongue, palate, lips, and jaw; pronunciation; and phrasing are developed. Students memorize the songs studied in this class.  May be taken two semesters for credit. Minimum of three practice hours a week. Prerequisite: None.

  MUSI 1211.  Harmony I.                                                  2:3:0

Introduction to the fundamental materials of music.  Includes a review of music fundamentals, the tonic, dominant, subdominant and leading tone triads, the triad in inversion, and the C clefs.  Music majors should enroll in piano class as part of their theory instruction. Prerequisites:  Satisfactory score on Music Placement Test or grade of C or better in MUSI 1301.  Concurrent enrollment in MUSI 1216.  [Offered fall semester.]

  MUSI 1212.  Harmony II.                                                 2:3:0

Continuation of MUSI 1211, expanding the tertian vocabulary to include all diatonic triads and secondary dominants, non-harmonic tones, diatonic seventh chords, and elementary modulation.  Includes binary and ternary forms.  Music majors should enroll in piano class as part of their theory instruction. Prerequisites:  Grade of C or better in MUSI 1211 and 1216 and concurrent registration in MUSI 1217. [Offered spring semester.]

  MUSI 1216.  Sight Singing and Ear Training I.               2:3:0

Development of aural skills through readings and dictation coordinated with materials in MUSI 1211, Elementary Harmony I.  Extensive use of computer in aural skill development. Prerequisite:  Concurrent enrollment in MUSI 1211. [Offered fall semester.]

  MUSI 1217.  Sight Singing and Ear Training II.              2:3:0

Continued development of aural skills coordinated with MUSI 1212, Elementary Harmony II.  Extensive use of computer in aural skill development. Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in MUSI 1212.  [Offered spring semester.]

  MUSI 1300.  Foundations in Music.                                                    3:3:0

Designed for elementary education students and music majors who desire a review of the essentials of music notation. Emphasis on music reading; competency skills on playing the piano, guitar, autoharp and recorder, teaching songs and rhythm instruments; basic understanding of major and minor scales, major and minor triads; basic understanding of reading and notating rhythm. Computer programs to supplement course work may be required. Prerequisite: THEA reading requirement met or concurrent enrollment in READ 0307. [Offered fall and spring semesters, and summer II.]

  MUSI 1301.  Music Fundamentals.                                                     3:3:0

For music majors who have had little or no theory in high school, and for non-music majors to fulfill Fine Art requirements.  Course work includes staff, clefs, scales, key signatures, triads, meter and rhythm, application of theory at the keyboard, and aural skill development. Computer programs to supplement course work may re required.  Prerequisite:  Consent of department head.  [Offered spring semester and summer II.]

  MUSI 1306.  Music Appreciation.  (Core 050)                                     3:3:0 

Provides a foundation for the enjoyment of music through the use of recorded and live music. Prerequisite:  THEA reading requirement met. [Offered fall and spring semesters.]

  MUSI 1308.  Survey of Music Literature. (Core 050)                          3:3:0

Detailed survey of the principal forms, periods, and composers of music presented in lectures with laboratory listening periods. Includes Antiquity and the Medieval, Renaissance,  Baroque and Classical style periods. Prerequisite:  Must  be music major or minor or  have consent of instructor.  THEA reading and writing requirements met. [Offered fall semester.]

  MUSI 1309.  Survey of Music Literature. (Core 050)                          3:3:0

Continuation of MUSI 1308. Three outside listening hours a week. Includes the  Romantic and Contemporary style periods. Prerequisites: THEA reading and writing requirements met and MUSI 1308 or consent of the instructor. [Offered spring semester.]

  MUSI 1310.  American Music.  (Core 050)                                         3:3:0

Detailed survey of American music from the 1890s to the present.  Includes ragtime, jazz, Broadway musical theater, rock, and folk music. Two outside listening hours a week. Prerequisite:  THEA reading requirement met.

  MUSI 2181.  Class Piano.                                                                 1:0:3 

Continuation, with increased difficulty, of the development of keyboard skills begun in the freshman courses (MUSI 1181 and 1182).  Includes all major and three minor scales, triad inversions and cadences in three positions,  harmonization of melodies, sight-reading, transposition, and repertoire.  Prerequisite: Grade of C or better in MUSI 1182. [Offered fall and spring semesters.]

  MUSI 2182.  Class Piano.                                                                 1:0:3 

Continuation, with increased difficulty, of the development of keyboard skills begun in the freshman courses (MUSI 1181 and 1182), and continued with MUSI 2181.  Includes scales, harmonization of melodies, sight-reading, transposition, and repertoire.    Prerequisite: Grade of C or better in MUSI 2181. [Offered fall and spring semesters.]

  MUSI 2211.  Harmony III.                                                      2:3:0 

Expansion of the study of the harmonic materials of tonal music including all diatonic and chromatic resources and their application to creative projects.  Includes formal procedures such as the rondo, fugue, and sonata-allegro. Music majors should enroll in piano class as part of their theory instruction. Prerequisites:  Grade of C or better in MUSI 1212 and MUSI 1217.  Concurrent registration in MUSI 2216. [Offered fall semester.]

  MUSI 2212.  Harmony IV.                                                    2:3:0 

Continuation of MUSI 2211 including an introduction to techniques of the late 19th and 20th centuries.  Emphasis on analysis of traditional structured procedures. Music majors should enroll in piano class as part of their theory instruction.  Prerequisites:  Grade of C or better in MUSI 2211 and MUSI 2216. Concurrent registration in MUSI 2217.  [Offered spring semester.]

  MUSI 2216.  Sight Singing and Ear Training III.                  2:3:0   

Development of aural skills coordinated with MUSI 2211.  Extensive use of computer in aural skill development. Prerequisite:  Concurrent enrollment in MUSI 2211. [Offered fall semester.]

  MUSI 2217. Sight Singing and Ear Training IV.                  2:3:0

Development of aural skills coordinated with MUSI 2212.  Extensive use of computer in aural skill development. Prerequisite:  Concurrent enrollment in MUSI 2212. [Offered spring semester.]

  MUEN 1125.  Ensemble—Jazz Band.                                                   1:0:3

Emphasis on performing music from all the stylistic periods of jazz.  Includes general jazz history and basic jazz improvisation.  May be taken for four semesters for credit toward graduation.  A standard jazz band instrumentation is chosen each semester by the instructor based on auditions.  Prerequisite:  Open to any college student who has had experience playing an instrument used in a standard jazz band. Ability to read music notation is essential. [Offered fall and spring semesters.]

   MUEN 1127.  Ensemble—Pioneer Band.                                             1:0:5

Performs concerts and represents the college at parades and special functions. Emphasis on the performance of serious band literature.  May be taken for four semesters for credit toward graduation. Chair placement is determined by audition.  Prerequisite:  Open to any college student who has had at least three years of high-school band experience.  [Offered fall and spring semesters.]

   MUEN 1132.  EnsemblePiano.                                                         1:0:3

Designed for the student who plans to transfer and major or minor in piano with emphasis on two pianos, piano four hands, chamber music, and piano accompaniment.  Emphasis on sight reading, piano technique, and interpretation of both original and specially arranged compositions for piano ensemble.  May be taken four semesters for credit toward graduation. Prerequisite:  Consent of instructor.

  MUEN 1141.  Ensemble—WCJC Choir.                                                1:0:5  

The WCJC Choir is required of all students who plan to major in voice at a four-year institution but is open to all students by auditions.  The choir engages in study and performance of choral literature from the Renaissance to the present including a major work usually in the spring semester. Performances consist of various campus programs, for civic organizations, and performances for the public at holidays, etc.  May be taken for four semesters for credit toward graduation.  Prerequisite:  Admission by audition. [Offered fall and spring semesters.]

  MUEN 1154.  Ensemble Chamber Singers.                                          1:0:3

Designed for 16 to twenty 20 singers chosen by audition.  The repertoire consists of all styles of 15th‑ and 16th-century vocal music through present-day compositions and vocal music for jazz and show choirs.  May be taken for four semesters for credit toward graduation. Prerequisites:  Selected by audition.  Selection is by instructor only. [Offered fall and spring semesters.]
