Curriculum for our Music Majors

The program for our Music Majors is an intensive, individual-oriented plan that emphasizes a balanced approach to both the completion of core coursework at WCJC and a broad base of Music courses and Ensemble work intended to prepare the student for transfer to a four-year institution as a Music major or minor. The program requires a significant commitment by the student to extra-curricular practice and performance hours well beyond the ordinary expectations of a full time student in general studies. In return, the Music faculty will work on an individual advisory basis to ensure successful completion of each Music major’s objectives.

Here are two examples. If a student comes to WCJC to gain a base for completion of a teaching degree in Music at a four-year institution, the Music faculty will guide that student through the school’s AA degree in Teaching, Plan C (p. 115, 2007-2008 catalog). This will give the student the necessary credentials to move forward to that objective. Currently, nearly 75% of our Music majors are interested in a teaching career.

If, on the other hand, the Music major intends to move toward a performance-based four-year degree, our faculty will coordinate the course work here at WCJC with the four-year institution that would best suit that student, preparing the student for the necessary auditions that are part of that objective and a smooth transfer to that school’s four-year plan.

All of our Music majors will be required to take Sight Singing and Theory courses, piano lessons, individual voice or instrument lessons, and participate in our ensembles while at WCJC. Following are examples of Field of Study course plans that can be used as a starting point for the individual program set up for each Music major:

Woodwind Major (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, or Saxophone)
