The USGS (United States Geological Survey, www.usgs.gov) is a very good source for all matters concerning geology.  The organization not only has extensive databases on every known aspect of geology, but also has educational programs for geology students.  Another professional organization is the AAPG (American Association of Petroleum Geologists, www.aapg.org).  This organization is centered around energy exploration but also gives the student vast databases on a great variety of subjects in the geological sciences.
