EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN - PARAMEDIC
Division of Workforce Development, Continuing Education, and Distance Learning 

  EMSP 1260.  Clinical-Emergency Medical Technology/Technician.          2:1:7

A method of instruction providing detailed education, training and work-based experience, and direct patient/client care, generally at a clinical site.  Specific detailed learning objectives are developed for each course by the college faculty. Clinical experiences are unpaid external learning experiences. Course may be repeated if topics and learning outcomes vary.  As outlined in the learning plan, the student will apply the theory, concepts, and skills involving specialized materials, equipment, procedures, regulations, laws; and interactions within and among political, economic, environmental, social, and legal systems associated with the particular occupation and the business/industry; demonstrate legal and ethical behavior, safety practices, interpersonal and teamwork skills, communicating in the applicable language of the occupation and the business or industry.  Prerequisite. Minimum passing scores on THEA reading and writing tests and current enrollment in EMSP 1401 with a minimum grade of 80%.  Type:  Tech

  EMSP 1338.  Introduction to Advanced Practice.      3:3:1

An exploration of the foundations necessary for mastery of the advanced topics of clinical practice out of the hospital.  At the completion of this module, the student will understand the roles and responsibilities of a paramedic within the EMS system; apply the basic concepts of development, Pathophysiology and pharmacology to assessment and management of emergency patients; be able to properly administer medications; communicate effectively with patients; and understand the medical/legal and ethical issues relating to EMS practice as well as the issues impacting the well-being of the paramedic.  Prerequisite: Emergency Medical Technician-Basic.  Type:  Tech

  EMSP 1355.  Trauma Management.                      3:2:2

A detailed study of the knowledge and skills necessary to reach competence in the assessment and management of patients with traumatic injuries.  At the completion of this module, the student will be able to integrate the pathophysiological principles and assessment findings to formulate a field impression and to implement the treatment plan for the trauma patient. Prerequisite: EMSP 1356.  Type:  Tech

  EMSP 1356.  Patient Assessment and Airway Management.                      3:2:3

A detailed study of the knowledge and skills required to reach competence in performing patient assessment and airway management.  At the completion of this module, the student will be able to take a proper history and perform a comprehensive physical exam on any patient; develop a patient care plan; communicate with others; and establish and /or maintain a patient airway, oxygenate, and ventilate a patient.  Prerequisite: EMSP 1338.  Type:  Tech

  EMSP 1401. Emergency Medical Technician–Basic.           4:4:4

This course is the introduction to the level of Emergency Medical Technician(EMT) – Basic.  Includes all the skills necessary to provide emergency medical care at a basic life support level with an ambulance service or other specialized services.  The student will display a working knowledge of clinical information and related topics relevant to the practice of pre-hospital emergency medical care of the EMT-Basic level; demonstrate the ability to competently perform all applicable skills; and exhibit attitudes and behavior consistent with the ethics and professionalism expected of the EMT-Basic. Prerequisite: Minimum passing scores on THEA reading and writing test, current American Heart Association Health Care Provider course completion.  Type:  Tech

  EMSP 2243.  Assessment-Based Management.                      2:1:3

Designed to provide for teaching and evaluating comprehensive, assessment-based patient care management.  At the completion of this module, the student will be able to integrate patho-physiological principles and assessment findings to formulate a field impression; and implement a treatment plan for patients with common complaints. Prerequisites: EMSP 1356, EMSP 1355, EMSP 2444, EMSP 2434, and EMSP 2330.  Type:  Tech  (Capstone Course)

  EMSP 2260.  Clinical-Emergency Medical Technology/Technician.          2:1:9

A method of instruction providing detailed education, training, and work-based experience, and direct patient/client care, generally at a clinical site.  Specific detailed learning objectives are developed for each course by the faculty.  On-site clinical instruction, supervision, evaluation, and placement is the responsibility of the college faculty. Clinical experiences are unpaid external learning experiences. Course may be repeated if topics and learning outcomes vary.  As outlined in the learning plan, the student will apply the theory, concepts and skills involving specialized materials, equipment, procedures, regulations, laws, and interactions within and among political, economic, environmental, social, and  legal systems associated with the particular occupation and the business/industry; demonstrate legal and ethical in the assessment and management of patients with cardiac emergencies.  At the completion of this module, the student will be able to integrate pathophysiological principles and assessment findings to formulate a field impression; and implement a treatment plan for the cardiac patient. Prerequisite: EMSP 1356.  Type:  Tech

  EMSP 2261.  Clinical-Emergency Medical Technology/Technician.          2:1:9

  EMSP 2262.  Clinical-Emergency Medical Technology/Technician.       2:0:24

A method of instruction providing detailed education, training and work-based experience, and direct patient/client care, generally at a clinical site.  Specific detailed learning objectives are developed for each course by the faculty.  On-site clinical instruction, supervision, evaluation, and placement is the responsibility of the college faculty.  Clinical experiences are unpaid external learning experiences.  Course may be repeated if topics and learning outcomes vary.  As outlined in the learning plan, the student will apply theory, concepts, and skills involving specialized materials, equipment, procedures, regulations, laws, and interactions within and among political, economic, environmental, social, and legal systems associated with the particular occupation and the business/industry; demonstrate legal and ethical behavior, safety practices, interpersonal and teamwork skills, communicating in the applicable language of the occupation and the business or industry. Prerequisite. Concurrent enrollment in EMSP 2243, EMSP 2444, and EMSP 1356.  Type:  Tech

  EMSP 2330.  Special Population.  3:3:2

A detailed study of the knowledge and skills necessary to reach competence in the assessment and management of ill or injured patients in nontraditional populations.  At the completion of this module, the student will be able to integrate pathophysiological principles and assessment findings to formulate a field impression and implement a treatment plan for neonatal, pediatric, and geriatric patients, diverse patients, and chronically ill patients.  Prerequisite: EMSP 1356, EMSP 2444, and EMSP 2434.  Type:  Tech

  EMSP 2338.  EMS Operations.                      3:2:3

A detailed study of the knowledge and skills necessary to reach competence to safely manage the scene of an emergency.  At the completion of this unit, the student will be able to safely manage medical incidents, rescue situations, hazardous materials and crime scenes.  Prerequisite: EMSP 1356.  Type:  Tech

  EMSP 2434.  Medical Emergencies.                      4:3:3

A detailed study of the knowledge and skills necessary to reach competence in the assessment and management of patients with medical emergencies.  At the completion of this module, the student will be able to integrate patho-physiological principles and assessment findings to formulate a field impression and implement a treatment plan for the medical patient.  Prerequisite: EMSP 1356 and EMSP 2444.  Type:  Tech

  EMSP 2444.  Cardiology. 4:3:3

A detailed study of the knowledge and skills necessary to reach competence in the assessment and management of patients with cardiac emergencies.  At the completion of this module, the student will be able to integrate patho-physiological principles and assessment findings to formulate a field impression; and implement a treatment plan for the cardiac patient.  Prerequisite: EMSP 1356.  Type:  Tech
