Prerequisite for all history courses is having passed THEA Reading and Writing.

There are three lecture hours a week for each course.

Credit: Three semester hours for each course.

Wharton County Junior College offers each of these history courses on-line.  Prerequisites for the courses would include the student’s ability to have consistent access to a personal computer with a reliable ISP (internet service provider), good typing and keyboard skills, knowledge and ability to send an email, as well as attachments.  

  HIST 1301.  U. S. History I.  (Core 060)                                         3:3:0

Survey beginning with the European background for the discovery of America and continuing to the close of Reconstruction in 1877.  Social, economic, cultural, military, political, and diplomatic developments are emphasized.  The diversity of the American culture is stressed and the wide varieties of contributions from all Americans are included.  Prerequisite: THEA reading and writing requirements met. [Offered fall, spring and summer semesters. Also offered via Internet and ITV.]

  HIST 1302.  U. S. History II.  (Core 060)                                        3:3:0

Continuation of HIST 1301, covering the period from the close of Reconstruction to the present, with emphasis upon the United States in the contemporary world. Prerequisite: THEA reading and writing requirements met. HIST 1301 recommended, but not required. [Offered fall, spring and summer semesters. Also offered via Internet and ITV.]

 HIST 2301.  History of Texas. (Core 080)                                      3:3:0

History of Texas from the Spanish period to the present day.  Stress on the period of early settlement, the revolution, the republic, and early statehood.  Includes the role of ethnic minorities in the development of the state. Prerequisite: THEA reading and writing requirements met.

 HIST 2311.  Western Civilization I. (Core 080)                              3:3:0

Survey of early European history from prehistoric time to the late 17th century. Traces the development of various governments, political history, social institutions, and culture often referred to as "western civilization.”  Prerequisite: THEA reading and writing requirements met. [Offered in the fall semester online]

 HIST 2312.  Western Civilization II. (Core 080)                            3:3:0   

Continuation of HIST 2311, covering the evolution of modern western civilization from the late 17th century to the present.  Emphasis will be placed on the wide variety of contributions to the development of modern civilization. Prerequisite:  THEA reading and writing requirements met.  HIST 2311 recommended. [Offered in the spring semester online.]
