The Wharton County Junior College Computer Science Department is committed to preparing students for entry level careers in the field of information technology through Certificate and Associate of Applied Science degree programs and offering appropriate transfer curricula in the discipline.  Computer Science Department faculty strive to foster an educational environment emphasizing technical knowledge and skills as well as critical thinking, verbal and written communication, the value of life-long learning, teamwork, responsibility, and ethical work habits.

The Computer Science Department currently offers the following programs:

  • Cisco Router Networking Certificate
The Cisco Router Networking program is designed to teach individuals network skills through a partnership with the Cisco Systems Networking Academy.  The Program is designed for individuals to work with predominantly Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) routers and LAN switches.  The Cisco Router Networking program is offered in full at the Fort Bend Technical Center in Richmond, while several courses are also offered at the main campus in Wharton. Courses in the Cisco Router Networking program can easily lead into the Network Administration AAS degree program if a student chooses to further their education after completing the certificate program.

  • PC Technical Support Certificate

The PC Technical Support program is designed to prepare students for entry-level PC desktop support positions.  Typical job duties may include providing hardware and software technical assistance to end users, resolving basic computer and network problems, installing or repairing hardware and software, and training end users.  This program is currently offered at the main campus in Wharton and at the Fort Bend Technical Center in Richmond.  Courses in the PC Technical Support program can easily lead into the Network Administration AAS degree program if a student chooses to further their education after completing the certificate program.

  • Computer Programming AAS Degree

The Computer Programming degree program is designed to prepare students for entry-level career opportunities in software development, web design, and web application programming.  Courses in this program are primarily offered at the main campus in Wharton and at the Sugar Land campus.  (Some classes may also be offered at the Fort Bend Technical Center in Richmond.)

  • Network Administration AAS Degree

The Network Administration program is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in network administration, system administration, and IT security.  This program is currently offered at the main campus in Wharton and at the Fort Bend Technical Center in Richmond.  Many classes offered in the Cisco Router Networking certificate program and the PC Technical Support certificate program can also be applied toward the AAS in Network Administration degree.

  • Computer Science AA Degree

The Computer Science AA degree program is a recommended course of study for students who plan to pursue a baccalaureate degree in Computer Science at a four-year institution of higher education in Texas. Students who fully complete this course of study will be eligible to apply for the Associate of Arts degree at WCJC. Courses in this program are primarily offered at the main campus in Wharton and at the Sugar Land campus. (Some courses may also be offered at the Fort Bend Technical Center in Richmond.)

The Computer Programming and Network Administration AAS degrees easily transfer into the University of Houston – Victoria’s Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences in Computer Information Systems degree program via the 2+2 transfer plan.  The BAAS in CIS program is offered at the University of Houston Sugar Land and Victoria campuses.
