Mission Statement

WCJC ChoirAs an integral academic component of the Visual and Performing Arts Department, the Music Department strives to provide an excellent academic foundation for students interested in a career in music, transfer to a four year institution, and/or desires to benefit as life-long learners.

We invite you to participate in an exciting and rewarding musical experience at Wharton County Junior College. The Music Department offers music courses and ensembles for the music major and non-music major. All music ensembles, music theory, sight singing and ear training, music literature, and music appreciation courses are available to the music major as well as the non-music major. Private lessons are offered to the music major in woodwinds, piano, organ, voice, brass, and percussion. One of three music courses (music appreciation and two music literature courses) may be taken to fulfill the Performing and Visual Arts requirement in the general education core. A recently adopted Field of Study in Music allows the music major to graduate with an Associate of Arts Degree at Wharton County Junior College and transfer successfully to a senior institution.

The Music Department is housed in the Duson-Hansen Fine Arts Building on the Wharton campus. Our facilities include music computer labs, practice rooms, rehearsal rooms, a performance hall (the Horton Foote Theater), a music library, a piano lab and classrooms. All facilities are available to the music major and non-music major. Our faculty consists of some of the finest music teachers and performers in Texas. Our class sizes are small allowing for personal student/teacher relationships. Our concerts and recitals are presented on-campus and off-campus and are well attended and received by the public. The Concert Choir has performed at Carnegie Hall and Disney World, on cruises to the Bahamas and to Mexico, and on stage in Branson, Missouri.

We again invite you to join us for two musical years of your college education. Should you need additional information, please contact our department (979-532-6366), by e-mail (waldropj@wcjc.edu), or by mail (Music Department, Wharton County Junior College, 911 Boling Highway, Wharton, TX 77488).
