Program Information
The study of human communication is increasingly important in our global society.
In a recent survey of 1,750 New York City corporate CEOs, 79% of those responding
identified the "ability to express ideas verbally" as the most important of the several
qualifications used to screen and evaluate new employees. Managers find themselves
communicating about three quarters of the time, and nearly two-thirds of the time
it's verbal communication.
Wharton County Junior College does not have a major in Speech Communication, but you can take several courses toward the degree here before you transfer to a 4 year program. We offer courses designed to develop skills which will facilitate your effectiveness in the workplace and teach you how people in various social contexts interact. In our research and teaching, we examine the modes of communication, the contexts and settings of communication, how communication skills are acquired, and how communication shapes societies and cultures.
