Band students rehearse for space-themed concert.

WHARTON, TEXAS – Trekkies and Star Wars fans won’t want to miss the Wharton County Junior College Band’s upcoming concert, “Mission Space.” Featuring songs from the popular science fiction franchises, the concert is sure to transport audiences to a galaxy far, far away.

The concert is scheduled for 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. March 7 at the Horton Foote Theatre in the Duson-Hansen Fine Arts Building on the Wharton campus. The show is free and open to the public.

WCJC Band Director Joe Waldrop said he chose this particular genre of music because it was something different and presented a learning curve for the students.

“There are a lot of tempo changes and this keeps the students on their toes,” he said.

The concert will open with songs from “2001: A Space Odyssey” and “Apollo 13.” The band will then present favorites from the Star Trek series and Star Wars films.

“I hope the community comes out to our performance and maybe we can bring back some memories of their childhood space dreams,” Waldrop said.
