WHARTON, TEXAS – The Wharton County Junior College Pioneers baseball team has kicked off its 2024-2025 season, and it looks to be an exciting one.  With plenty of new faces on the team, WCJC Head Baseball Coach Trey Porras believes there’s plenty of potential for a successful season.

“It’s a new season, with new optimism,” Porras said. “There is an overall feeling of being engaged and excited. We want to be the best collective team we can be.”

The Pioneers began the season by traveling to San Marcos to play at Bobcat Ballpark on the campus of Texas State University against Odessa College. After dropping the first game of the three-game series, the Pioneers got back on track by winning the second game, 2-1. After dropping the final game of the series, the Pioneers traveled to Beaumont, where they bounced back by taking a game against Baton Rouge Community College, 4-1.

WCJC assistant coach Ricky Watkins has appreciated the team’s work ethic.

“We have a good club, and all of the players have worked really hard,” he said. “I’m really looking forward to seeing the team grow and compete.”

The Pioneers will have a majority of new faces this season, and the new players offer unique strengths to the team. Porras is excited about the pitching staff, and Watkins looks to take advantage of the club’s athleticism on the bases.

One highlight of the season is the Bregman Cares Classic, hosted at Constellation Field in Sugar Land. The tournament will be played Feb. 7 through Feb. 9 and admission is free. Porras is excited that WCJC will once again participate in the event.

“Anytime you get to play in a venue like that, it is special,” Porras said. “We appreciate everything the Bregman Cares Foundation and the Houston Astros have done to make this event possible.”
