WHARTON – Wharton County Junior College Band Director Joe Waldrop will retire this summer after more than three decades of directing. His final concerts will feature songs that he has grown to cherish over the years.

“We will be playing a few of the songs that I have really enjoyed over the course of 36 years as a band director,” said Waldrop.

Two concerts are planned for Waldrop’s final semester at WCJC. The first, entitled “My Favorite Songs I,” will have two performances, one at 3 p.m. and the other at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at the Pioneer Student Center on the Wharton campus. The event is free and open to the public.

A final concert – “My Favorite Songs II” – will be performed later this spring.

Both concerts will feature a wide variety of genres. The Feb. 11 event will include classical music, jazz, TV theme songs, movies, and songs from two of the most popular rock groups of all time: The Beatles and The Beach Boys. The 3 p.m. performance will be a shorter version of the full evening concert.

“I think that the music will be fun and bring back a few memories for our more distinguished audience members,” Waldrop said. “I hope that everyone who attends will have a great time, and what a way to go out with a bang.”
