WHARTON – Hannah Purnell has participated in a host of productions as a drama student at Wharton County Junior College. This week, the El Campo native will tackle a new role, serving as director of the children’s show, “A Recipe for Disaster.”

Purnell has high hopes that her directorial debut will be well-received by area youngsters.

“When I was picking a show to do, I wanted one that not only would the kids think was funny, but we would, too,” she said. “This one caught my eye not only because of the jokes, but also the physical humor. I hope the children watching will get a laugh, and the adults that brought them will as well.”

Since “A Recipe for Disaster” is aimed at younger audiences, there will be only one show, scheduled for noon Saturday, April 26, at the Horton Foote Theatre on the Wharton campus. The show is free of admission and open to the public.

The plot centers on a young culinary school apprentice who intends to create a scrumptious five-course meal but gets sidetracked by the directions of competing master chefs. Mayhem ensues in the kitchen as each chef attempts to have his instructions followed while undermining the directions of his competitor.

The show features a wide variety of props — a fact that created some rehearsal mayhem of its own.

“Getting all the props together has been a challenge because we have to double check and make sure we have everything,” Purnell said. “Rehearsal has been interesting because our stand-in props have been everything from pillows to empty drink bottles.”

Cast and crew for “A Recipe for Disaster” include Aidan Meek of Hungerford, Seth Thayne of Wharton, Danté Hancock of East Bernard, Valerie Brown of Eagle Lake, Ryan Martin of Needville, Evony Holloway of El Campo, Lisette Vargas of El Campo, McKenna Flores of Richmond, Kentanya Spencer of Rosenberg and Josephine LaPrad of Milford, Massachusetts.
