WHARTON, TEXAS – Wharton County Junior College this fall is adding new science courses to its core curriculum to aid students pursuing non-science majors.

The WCJC Biology Department has added three new courses to the recently revised core curriculum, beginning Fall 2025. The first course, Nutrition & Diet Therapy (BIOL 1322), having been previously available to allied health students, is a lecture only core science class that students may take in-person or online. The Environmental Biology lecture (BIOL 2306) and lab (BIOL 2106) are also new to the core, and allow for additional flexibility as students may opt out of the lab, pending their degree plan requirements.

Finally, Human Biology (BIOL 2404), is a single-semester lecture and lab-based course in the study of the human body. This course is designed to satisfy non-science majors’ degree plans as well as assist those students who may need a refresher course before enrolling in the Human Anatomy and Physiology (BIOL 2401 and 2402) course sequence that is the backbone of allied health programs.

“These changes better accommodate non-science majors, while maintaining our pathways for our transfer STEM majors,” said WCJC Biology Department Chair Jennifer Mahlmann.

“Many transfer institutions have variable science credit requirements depending on selected major,” added WCJC Division Chair of Life Sciences Kevin Dees. “Our revised core allows multiple options to meet students’ needs.”

The core curriculum is comprised of 42 semester credit hours that every student must take in order to obtain an associate’s or bachelor’s degree. For more information on WCJC’s programs and course requirements, visit wcjc.edu.
