WHARTON, TEXAS — The Wharton County Junior College Drama Department’s first performance of the Spring 2026 season reveals the horrors of 1960’s-era mental institutions through the lens of a character made famous by Hollywood icon Jack Nicholson.

Originally written as a novel, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” is best known by its film adaptation, starring Nicholson as a rebellious patient at a mental hospital.

WCJC’s version is set for 7 p.m. Feb. 19-21 at the Horton Foote Theatre in the Duson-Hansen Fine Arts Building on the Wharton campus. The show is free of admission and open to the public.

WCJC Instructor of Drama Jami Hughes said the time was right to perform the play, which requires a large male cast.

“I was blessed to have so many male students this semester and I wanted to find an outlet to use as many of them as possible,” she said. “This is such a strong well-known production and I’ve never had the opportunity to produce it before. It has come together beautifully with the incredibly talented cast that I have.”

Cast and crew for “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” include Jony Hernandez of Sealy, Malachi Moore of Bay City, Hailey Thorn of Katy, Cooper Claxton of East Bernard, McKenna Flores of Richmond, Sammuel Robinson of El Campo, Aidan Meek of Hungerford, Charles Arriara of Sealy, Eric Rodriguez of Sabine Pass, Santana Medina of Tidehaven, Genesis Molina of Hungerford, Kezia Molina of Hungerford, Seth Thayne of Wharton, Ketanya Spencer of Richmond, Makayla Medina of Tidehaven, Ciera Hertzog of Wharton and Regina Barnes of El Campo.
