WHARTON, TEXAS — The Wharton County Junior College Band’s first concert of the Spring 2026 season is sure to be a crowd pleaser, covering beloved songs from iconic composers Rodgers and Hammerstein. Entitled “From the Pit to the Podium: Broadway Favorites,” the concert is scheduled for 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, in the Horton Foote Theatre in the Duson-Hansen Fine Arts Building on the Wharton campus. The performance is free of admission and open to the public.

WCJC Band Director Dr. Jeffrey Anderson said that the concert’s genre is ideal for his students.

“I decided to choose this theme and genre because we have several band students involved in theater and several students who are in choir. Musical theater crosses over into both of these art forms wonderfully,” he said.

Selections will cover the Golden Age of Broadway, a period in the mid-20th Century marked by iconic musicals like South Pacific and The Sound of Music.

“The meat and potatoes of our concert centers around the music of Rodgers and Hammerstein, which encompasses some of the most beloved melodies known to American culture,” Anderson said.

Anderson said band students should have a fun and educational time learning the music.

“I hope students can appreciate the emotional and energetic impact these classic musical theater tunes can impart on listeners,” he said. “Each student, no matter which instrument they play, gets the chance to play the melody several times throughout the concert, challenging us to listen to each other and work on our balance, blend and intonation.”
