WHARTON, TEXAS — The Wharton County Junior College Band will celebrate the 250th anniversary of America and the 80th anniversary of WCJC at its upcoming concert, “America 250: A Musical Journey.” The performance is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, at the Pioneer Student Center on the Wharton campus. It’s free of admission and open to the public.

A reception is set for 6 p.m. prior to the concert to celebrate WCJC’s eight decades of providing educational opportunities to the region. Refreshments and commemorative gifts will be part of the event.

“We will be performing the WCJC Alma Mater as a nod to our college’s 80th anniversary year,” said WCJC Band Director Dr. Jeffrey Anderson.

Guest performer will be former WCJC Choir member Lindsey Reeves, who now works for the college as a communications specialist and receptionist. Reeves will join the band on a medley Anderson arranged from the 1929 musical comedy, “Fifty Million Frenchmen” by Cole Porter.

“Despite the title, the musical is about American characters and is a satire comparing the free attitude of Paris to the censorship and prohibition in the United States at that time,” Anderson said.

Other selections for the concert will include Sousa’s “The Stars and Stripes are Forever” and “Armed Forces Salute,” an arrangement dedicated to veterans and current service members.

“We are honored to be the featured ensemble at the college’s anniversary event, and are excited to present this rousing and meaningful music to our audience,” Anderson said.
