TSI Testing

The Texas Success Initiative requires entering college students to take a college-readiness assessment in English, Language Arts, and Reading, and Math. Here's what you need to know.

How Do I Take the TSI at WCJC?

 

To take the Texas Success Initiative assessment (TSI) at a WCJC Testing Center needs, you must complete the WCJC admissions application through ApplyTexas to receive your WCJC ID. 

Allow a minimum of five business days for WCJC to receive and process your application. Once processed, you will receive an email from WCJC with your WCJC ID number (don't forget to check your spam). Wait times may be longer during peak admissions periods.

Next, make an appointment with your preferred WCJC Testing Center via phone or email. Appointments fill up fast, so schedule yours early. Please call the WCJC Testing Center if you are unable to make your scheduled time. When scheduling your TSI appointment, please include:

  1. Your full name
  2. Your WCJC ID number
  3. The day and time that you would like to make the appointment
  4. The section(s) of the TSI that you need to take

Following confirmation of your appointment, you will receive an email with instructions for test day. Please follow them carefully.

What to Do:

  • Pre-Assessment Certificate: Examinees must complete the Pre-Assessment Activity before taking the TSIA for the first time at WCJC. Students must print the certificate of completion and bring it to the Testing Center.

What to Bring:

  • Photo ID: This can be a government ID (driver's license or state ID) or an ID that has your name and picture, such as a high school ID, Skyward account, or work ID.
  • Receipt of payment: The cost to take the TSI at WCJC is $29, regardless of how many sections you take. You must pay at the cashier's desk on the day of your appointment prior to coming to the testing center. 

What Not to Bring: 

  • Do not bring personal items to the test, including cell phones, smart watches, calculators, or other electronic devices; any food or drink; and any paper, including money. All personal items must be stored prior to entering the testing room.

Frequently Asked Questions

 

You'll complete all sections of the TSI on a computer at the Testing Center. It's an untimed test, but most students complete it in about four hours.

You cannot bring anything into the testing room with you and cannot access internet sites, computer programs, calculators, dictionaries, translators, cell phones, or other electronic devices during the TSI test. An on-screen calculator is accessible for some math questions during the TSI. Any violation of WCJC Testing Center policies will invalidate your test.

 

We encourage you to study before taking the TSI. Try the free study app on the Accuplacer Student Portal (select "TSIA2 Practice Resources for Texas Students"). 

 

Students who plan to attend WCJC but took the TSI at their high school or another college can transfer their scores to WCJC by completing the TSI Cross-Institutional Score Submission Request Form.

Note that test scores are only valid for five years. If you took your test more than five years ago, you will need to retake the TSI.

 

In order to be considered exempt from the TSI, you must meet one of the criteria below and have submitted all official documentation to the WCJC Office of Admissions. ALL tests must have been taken no more than five years ago and all personal information provided on the score report must exactly match the information in the student's WCJC record.

SAT Exemptions:
For tests taken no more than 5 years ago:

  • Math: 530 (no composite required)
  • ELAR: 480 Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) (no composite score required)
  • Official score reports must be received from CollegeBoard; personal copies of score reports cannot be used for an exemption. Visit CollegeBoard to request your official SAT scores be sent to WCJC (School Code: 6939). CollegeBoard generally takes two weeks to fulfill a request.

ACT Exemptions:

  • For tests taken prior to February 14, 2023 and no more than 5 years ago, a student with an ACT composite score of at least 23 AND a math and ELAR score of 19.
  • For tests taken after February 15, 2023 and no more than 5 years ago, a student with a math of 22 and a combined English and Reading score of 40.

GED Exemptions:
The following minimum scores are required for exemption. An official certificate/transcript must be received by WCJC to receive an exemption.

  • Math: 165 (Mathematical Reasoning)
  • ELAR: 165 (Reasoning Through Language Arts - RLA)

HiSET Exemptions:
The following minimum scores are required for exemption. Tests must be no older than 5 years old and taken before August 31, 2021. An official certificate/transcript must be received by WCJC in order to receive an exemption.

  • Math: 15 (Mathematics subtest)
  • ELAR: A combination of each of the below minimum scores must be reached to be exempt from ELAR:
    • Reading subtest: 15 AND
    • Writing subtest: 15 AND
    • Essay: 4

TAKS Exemptions:

  • A student with a TAKS exit-level Math score of at least 2200 is exempt from the Math requirement.
  • A student with a TAKS exit-level English/Language Arts score of at least 2200 and an essay score of at least 3 or above is exempt from ELAR requirements.

STAAR Exemptions:

  • A student with a STAAR Math score of at least 4000 for Algebra II is exempt from the Math requirement.
  • A student with a STAAR English/Language Arts score of at least Level 2 (4000) for English III is exempt from ELAR requirements.

Veteran Exemptions:

  • Students serving on active duty as a member of the U.S. Armed Forces, the Texas National Guard, or as a member of a reserve component of the U.S. Armed Forces who have been serving for at least 3 years prior to enrollment are fully TSI exempt.
  • Students who, on or after August 1, 1990, were honorably discharged, retired, or released from active duty as a member of the U.S. Armed Forces, the Texas National Guard, or a reserve component of the U.S. Armed Forces are fully TSI exempt.

Degree, Transfer, and Previous Course Work Exemptions:

  • A student who has earned an associate degree or higher from a Texas public college or university is fully TSI exempt.
  • A student who successfully completes (grade of "C" or better) an academic college-level course which, at the time the course is completed, has a pre-requisite in the current WCJC College Catalog of:
    • "TSI ELAR (Reading and/or Writing) satisfied" will be considered TSI exempt in ELAR.
    • "TSI Math satisfied" will be considered TSI exempt in Math.
  • This exemption is valid for any applicable WCJC course or any course which has been transferred for credit from an accredited institution.
  • A student completing an HB 5 course related to reading, writing, and/or mathematics according to the terms of an articulation agreement between WCJC and the local school district will have a TSI waiver for two years at WCJC.
  • A student receiving a certificate in a Texas College Bridge course related to ELAR and/or mathematics will have a TSI waiver in the related subject area(s) at WCJC for two years after graduation from high school. Students must complete a college-level course in the certified subject area(s) within the first year of their enrollment at WCJC in order to retain their TSI exemption.

After the TSI, you will receive a printed score report. A link to your score report will also be sent to your email. Students should keep a copy of their score report for their personal records. 

You can access your score report at any time (up to 5 years after the test date) through the Accuplacer Student Portal. WCJC does not send TSI scores to other institutions and does not accept unofficial test scores.

 

 

Students who do not meet the TSI standard :

  • Cannot graduate from an associate degree program or from a level two certificate program until the standard is met.
  • Must enroll continuously in college-readiness classes (excluding summer sessions and mini terms) directly related to the applicable section(s) (ELAR or math) until they are college-ready in that area. Students must give priority in course selection to the corresponding college-readiness class(es).
  • Must satisfactorily complete all coursework in the developmental sequence at the point of placement.
  • Must meet with an academic advisor as part of mandatory advising/TSIA remediation advisement until the college-readiness status is achieved, either by retesting in the area they did not meet the standard or completing the college-readiness sequence with a grade of A, B, or C.

Students may take the TSI as many times as they wish. Retesting fees apply.
