Healthcare Courses

Take non-credit courses on campus and earn certifications across the healthcare industry. Work behind the scenes in Texas healthcare as an administrative assistant or be on the front line as a certified nursing assistant, phlebotomist, and more.

 

Through the Billing and Coding Specialist (BCS) training program, you'll learn the knowledge and skills needed to perform basic billing and coding functions at hospitals, physician offices, surgery centers, nursing homes, dental offices, home healthcare agencies, mental health facilities and even insurance companies and consulting firms. Upon completion of the program, you will be able to: 

  • gather/review essential patient information.
  • verify required documentation before releasing patient information.
  • audit billing to prevent fraud/abuse.

Prepares for an entry-level position as a nursing assistant in a variety of settings, including nursing homes, hospitals, adult day care centers, personal homes, and assisted living facilities. It is regulated by the Texas Health and Human Services. In this program, you'll learn:

  • how to give direct client care including communication and interpersonal skills.
  • infection control.
  • safety and emergency procedures.
  • the Heimlich maneuver.
  • methods to promote residents' independence and respect residents' rights.
  • personal care skills.
  • basic nursing skills.

Clinical Information: A 40-hour clinical is required. You will be assigned to an approved site to complete your hours under the supervision of your instructor. The clinical schedule is set for Monday-Friday, 7am to 4pm with no exceptions or flexibility. No absences are allowed during the week of clinical.

Certification Information: After successfully completing both parts of the CNA program, WCJC will recommend you for state testing. To practice as a Certified Nurse Aide in the State of Texas, you must pass the state exam. It is your responsibility to register for state testing through the testing provider. The cost of the state exam for our Certified Nurse Aide Training Program is approximately $125. Please consider this additional cost when applying for the program.

The office skills required to work in a medical or physician's office are quite different from other clerical jobs. This comprehensive program is designed to teach you the knowledge and skills necessary to gain employment in a medical office setting (e.g., physician's office, dental office, therapy clinic, chiropractic clinic, etc.). Topics covered in this program include:

  • anatomy,
  • medical terminology,
  • medical office procedures,
  • administrative support, and
  • basic diagnostic coding using the ICD-10-CM classification system. 

In many offices, the MAA is the first person that patients come in contact with therefore, you will also learn interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills that will help you provide a positive experience for patients to build and maintain a loyal patient base. Resume writing and interview techniques are also built into the course.

Learn skills and procedures necessary to be an effective medical assistant. This comprehensive program covers how to: 

  • perform various administrative duties, including answering telephones, greeting patients, updating and filing patients' medical records, filling out insurance forms, handling correspondence, scheduling appointments, arranging hospital admission and laboratory services, and handling billing and coding.

You will be allowed to choose your own clinical site where you will complete administrative and clinical tasks in the offices of physicians, hospitals, or other healthcare facilities. Please be aware that additional expenses may arise during clinical rotations.

A pharmacy technician is a health care provider who performs pharmacy-related functions in community, retail, and hospital pharmacies, long-term care facilities, pharmaceutical manufacturers, third-party insurance companies, computer software companies, and government-related jobs. In this program, you'll learn about:

Acquire the skills necessary to perform a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and standard precautions. Learn how to:

  • properly identify the patient,
  • interpret the tests requested on the requisition,
  • accurately explain the procedure to the patient and prepare patients accordingly,
  • perform the skin/vein puncture,
  • draw blood into the correct tubes with the proper additives,
  • affix tubes with electronically printed labels,
  • instruct patients on post-puncture care,
  • restore hemostasis of the puncture site, and
  • deliver specimens to a laboratory. 

We emphasize infection prevention, practicing standard and universal precautions, proper specimen handling, and quality control; but we also cover topics such as professionalism, ethics, and some medical terminology.

Clinical Information: This program requires 120 hours of supervised work-based instruction through clinical rotations where you will refine your skills in drawing blood from patients for clinical or medical testing, transfusions, donations, or research. Clinical assignments are determined during the lecture/skills training portion of the program and will begin once that portion of the program ends. Clinical sites are decided by the college and cannot be changed. Clinical schedules are set by the clinical site and cannot be altered once assigned. Please be aware that additional expenses may arise during the clinical rotations at your expense.

Certification Information: Upon successful completion of the program, you are eligible to sit for the American Society of Clinical Pathology's (ASCP) Phlebotomy Technician Certification (PBT) examination or the National Healthcareer Association's (NHA) Phlebotomy Technician Certification (CPT) examination at an additional cost. Public Safety Courses

Take non-credit courses on campus for your personal and professional development. Learn CPR or become a certified ECA or EMT.

 

Emergency Medical Responders (EMR) provide immediate lifesaving care to critical patients who access the emergency medical services system. EMRs have the knowledge and skills necessary to provide immediate lifesaving interventions while awaiting additional EMS resources to arrive. EMRs also provide assistance to higher-level personnel at the scene of emergencies and during transport. 

This certification is most often suitable for individuals that are Fire Fighters in pursuit of TCFP, first responders in rural areas, industry campus first responders, law enforcement, and other similar roles. The course includes Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification. Upon successful completion, the student will receive a BLS CPR card from the American Heart Association and be eligible to sit for the EMR National Certification exam.

  • EMSP 1005: Emergency Care Attendant (64 Hours)

Certification Information: Upon completion of the ECA program, you will be eligible to sit for the certification exam through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT).

 

 

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program prepares you to be an emergency medical care provider in a pre-hospital setting. This includes the skills necessary to provide emergency medical care at a basic life support level with an emergency service or other specialized service. In this two-part course, you will demonstrate proficiency in cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains in accordance with the current guidelines of the credentialing agency. In this course, you'll learn how to apply operational principles in out-of-hospital environments, demonstrate life-saving care to patients at the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) level, and display professional and ethical behaviors expected of emergency personnel. During the clinical portion of this program, you will have a health-related work-based learning experience that enables you to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional. 

EMT courses are offered at Richmond, Wharton, and Bay City campuses, as well as off-site locations on occasion. CE offers the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)/Clinical as a noncredit mirror training program for Continuing Education Units (CEU) only. This CE mirror course is non-transferable and cannot be applied to a degree program. The noncredit version of the EMT program is ideal for individuals already in the field that are looking to advance in their careers or enhance their current skill set. Individuals interested in possibly pursuing an AMET or Paramedic license should enroll in the EMT program for credit through the WCJC Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department.

Certification Information: Upon completion of the EMT program, you will be eligible to sit for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians exam. After successfully completing the National Registry exam, you may be eligible to apply for state certification/licensure through the Texas Department of State Health Services.

This 4-hour course is designed for those considering a career in the health care profession or for individuals who want to learn how to save a life. Learn the techniques of life-saving skills for respiratory and cardiac emergencies involving adults, children, and infants. Upon completion, you will receive a CPR card from the American Heart Association. This course satisfies the CPR requirement for students enrolling in Dental Hygiene, EMT, Medical Assistant, Nursing, Physical Therapist Assistant, and Radiologic Technology.

This 8-hour course is for anyone with little or no medical training who needs a course completion card for work, regulatory (e.g., OSHA), or other requirements, or who wants to be prepared for an emergency situation in any setting. The AHA's Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED course trains participants to provide first aid, CPR, and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) in a safe, timely, and effective manner. Upon completion, you will receive a CPR card from the American Heart Association.
